Spank your TOMATOES for bigger harvests! Plus pruning and using apple juice for setting blossoms

Keep your tomato plants “in line” by spanking them! It helps with pollenation, stimulates growth, and keeps them from misbehaving 😉 We also talk about pruni…

Question by Fanservice: What does pollination mean for tomato plants?
I’ve been growing two tomato plants in my storm shelter (it’s like a small green house that connects to my porch). I’ve been growing it and watering it everyday for over a month and it’s grown to a height of 60cm and no fruit.

I read that tomato plant needs pollination. Does that mean I have to put it outside to work for bees or something to make it happen? I don’t understand what I am doing wrong. Help!

Does your plants have flowers on them? If yes, you should let bees or other insect pollinate them.
(sometimes people pick the flowers to let the plants grow bigger)

  9. That is so funny cause I did the same thing! Im a new gardener but I decided to experiment and remove the peat pots from a few and they look like runts compared to the ones that I didn’t disturb LOL! crazy

  10. LOL. I’ve always done this. I stake my tomatoes and I just shake or spank the stake with my hand and it shakes the whole plant pretty well. As for the peat pots, I break open the bottoms at least. Sometimes I take them off, sometimes I don’t. They don’t decomp as quickly as the advertisements lead you to believe (which isn’t a problem for me), BUT, in my experience (only a few years) tomato roots are tough and grow through almost ANYTHING, including my hard clay soil and those peat pots.

  12. I’d mix compost in with it. When it puts on fruit you’ll need to feed every week to 10 days because the plant will suck the nutrients right out of the bucket. A liquid mix will work fine.

  26. Tomatoes don’t need to be pollinated. They do it themselves.

If it’s inside, all you have to do is shake it 2-3 times. Repeat in a couple of days. That’s enough,

If you want to be sure, keep shaking it. You won’t hurt the plant.
