Question by Me: Is tomato sauce the same thing as tomato paste? If not, how can I use it instead?
My recipe calls for tomato paste, but all I have is tomato sauce

its pretty much the same. just paste comes in smaller sizes rather than sauces.

Tomato paste is much more concentrated. To use tomato sauce, just reduce it (boil it gently to remove the water) by about half or three quarters.

tomato paste has been cooked for hours, reduced. It has no additional spices to it. Little water content, and generally fairly sweet
Tomato sauce is more like tomato puree with additional spices to it. It also has a lot more water content to it.
I don’t know if you can use the sauce in place of paste. My guess would even if you cooked the sauce down, it would still have those spices. The recipe might require the sweetness from the paste to add to the overall flavor.
Tomato paste is MUCH thicker and has a slightly bitter taste, so, no they are not the same.
