Balsamic vinegar
What do you think? Answer below!
Christin, I make my own.
Some salt or some vinegar, a little chilli perhaps. anything sour will balance out the sweet.
I hate the store bought varieties too. Its really easy to make your own!
Soften some onions, garlic, then chuck in some tinned tomatos, salt and pepper, bit of oregano or basil, voila.
Try adding some dry red wine to it. Balsamic vinegar is a sweet vinegar so I don’t think that would help, nor would salt.
If you have a decent size freezer, just make a big batch of your own sauce and freeze in portion sizes. Finely chop 1 cup each onions, celery and carrots and 2-6 cloves peeled garlic (I’ve used my food processor for the chopping and it was fine), measure 1 tablespoon each dried basil and dried oregano (crush the herbs between your fingers). Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large stock pot or dutch oven, add the veggies and herbs, saute until soft. Add 6 14 oz cans whole peeled tomatoes (squashed) or the equivalent in larger cans, or 6 14 oz cans chopped tomatoes or tomato puree along with an 8 oz can of tomato paste and 1 cup dry red wine. Add salt & pepper to taste. Simmer for 2-4 hours. Allow to cool, then pack into portion size containers and freeze. Once cool, you transfer to a measuring cup and put in Ziploc bags to freeze also. Put the in round cup or bowl and fold the top back so the bag stands up. The amount of tomatoes or puree does not have to be exact, just close.
You can also can this sauce, which is quite a bit of work. http://www.simplycanning.com/canning-tomato-sauce.html
I’m with C.M.C…I make my own. When I’m in a pinch however, I use Hunt’s spaghetti sauce in a can. It’s not sweet (to me). You might also want to try some more upscale sauces such as Delallo.
