The Green Life With TPG – Tomato Ethics & Value Theory -Episode 22

Who owns a tomato? Who owns the earth? These are the questions that I am faced after a tomato theft situation at the hands of rampart and some of my neighbor…

Question by morningstar9292: Green tomatoes opinion?
I’m looking for opinions on fried green tomatoes. I love fried red tomatoes but really, are green ones any good. Also, what else can one do with green tomatoes and please don’t suggest pickling them. I hate anything pickled. Thanks for your opinions or recipes.
hugsandhissyfits…thanks for the info. I bookmarked that link. I think it will come in very handy since I have tons of tomatoes on the vines and not one of them are turning red yet. ugh. lol

I love fried green tomatoes. But, they’re somewhat bitter, so you might want to put some sugar on them. I roll mine in flour, add salt, pepper, and sugar and fry in butter. Yummy.

  9. The green ones are good fried- they are not a sweet tasting as red and a little more firm is all. I’ve used green tomatoes in omelets, sauteed and added to stir fry, and they are really good in fried corn or boiled into rice.

  10. I have only had fried green tomatoes once or twice. But I did some a couple of weeks ago with a seasoned panko breading (homemade seasoning not store bought) and sprinkled on a little salt and a then also a little ketchup. Very very yummy.

But the idea of adding them into stir fry sounds very good also. Try adding them 50/50 with red tomatoes and making salsa.

    Green Tomato Pie

    Ingredients:
6 to 8 medium green tomatoes
    2 tablespoons lemon juice
    1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    3/4 cup granulated sugar
    2 tablespoons cornstarch
    1 tablespoon butter
    pastry to 9-inch 2-crust pie
    Preparation:
Wash the green tomatoes well; peel and slice. In a saucepan, combine tomatoes with lemon juice, peel, salt, and cinnamon. Cook tomato mixture over low heat, stirring frequently. Combine sugar and cornstarch; stir into tomato mixture. Cook mixture until clear, stirring constantly. Add butter, remove from heat, and let stand until slightly cooled. Line a 9-inch pie plate with pastry; pour in tomato mixture. Cover with top pastry, seal edges, crimp, and cut several small slits in crust to allow steam to escape. Bake at 435° for 35 to 45 minutes, or until nicely browned. Serve warm or cooled.
