Question by fiestyredhead: What would cause our tomatoes out of the garden to be bland this year.?
What would cause this? We’ve picked them when they are red. We’ve even tried picking them a bit earlier than normal and leaving them a bit longer. But that doesn’t help. Is it something with the soil? fertilizer? too much water or lack of???

We didn’t have much water this year, and our tomatoes were horrid.

  1. I grew my Tomatos in leave mulch.
If you don’t have a shredder all you have to do is mash them up manually with your hands and get a five gallon bucket full.

Any leaves will work as long as they are dry so they crush up good.
Then pour some water in the bucket of leaves and mash them to a pulp with your hands sop that they get thick and creamy looking.

Cut some holes on the bottom of the bucket to let the water drain out.

Then place your Tomatoe plants in the leave mulch and you don’t have to do anything else , but water them daily.

    No plant food needed.
Your Tomatoes will grow big and pretty .

I get compliments all the time and the secret is what I just told you . No dirt. Just leaves from your trees mulched up./
For some darn reason those leaves have allot of nutrients that Tomatoes love.

  2. The variety.

You probably got hybrids who only worry about ripening fast. If you get heirlooms, you will pick them later, but enjoy true taste of great tomatoes…

Next time, make sure the label in the six pack (if that is what you got) reads “heirloom.”

  3. Hello,

I use the “Garden Safe” Tomato and Vegetable Fertilizer. This organic liquid tomato and vegetable fertilizer is made from sugar beet roots. I learned this from my sister who lives in California. It’s organic and safe and the tomatoes are always so fragrant !

  4. I GROW TOMATOES EVERY YEAR, AND LOTS OF RAIN OR WATER CAN CAUSE THEM TO BE LESS FLAVORFUL.
