Question by Sydmom: Tomatoes won’t grow! I have planted 7 plants now, and they are just sitting and not growing after 2 weeks.
They are still green, but look a little wilty. Are they dead, dying, need something??
It has been a little chilly, not freezing, and a little rainy. Too much water, not enough? I have never had trouble with growing tomatoes before. I have 6 different kind, so it can’t be a “type” problem.

tomatoes need heat, both in the soil and in the air. You mentioned it’s been chilly……there you go. Tomatoes are tropical. So hold back on the water since the plants aren’t actively using it.

  1. I agree on the temperature as stated above…. warm soil, warm nights, and SUNSHINE will get them going…. patience….

  2. The size of your pot/ and condition/or compaction of your soil can be a determining factor in plant growth….this goes for all plants! Your roots need time to grow to their environment. Since your plants are recently planted you can purchase a product called OSMOCOTE (about $ 6.00 at Wal-Mart), and spinkle this smart release plant food around the top of your soil and then water to activate. This should help the plant become stronger and the root system to establish itself. Always water well in the morning….Also ask yourself if you are re-planting your tomatoes in the same spot year after year. They need to be rotated to a different spot every two years. Hope this helps! Happy Spring!

  3. if you cannot get enoungh heat, light, you may want to consider investing in some lamp heat.
