Question by Ziggy Stardust: What are some good whisky cocktails?
I always order a whisky and coke. I would like to incorporate some new (manly) whisky based drinks into my repitoire. I would like some suggestions. Things I do not like in my drinks: Salt, tomato juice, anything non-whisky.

There’s the Manhattan.

20mL sweet red Vermouth
dash Angostura bitters
Maraschino cherry
Stir(some people shake it) over ice, strain into chilled glass, garnish with the cherry.
The Ward 8
2ounce rye whisky
1/2 ounce orange juice
1/2 ounce lemon juice
1 teaspoon grenadine
maraschino cherry
Shake rye, juices and grenadine over ice, strain into a chilled glass garnish with the cherry
The Rusty Nail
45mL Scotch whisky
25mL Drambuie
Fill a 16 ounce glass with ice,add scotch and Drambuie and stir gently.Keep stirring until a thick frost forms on the outside of the glass. If you substitute Canadian whisky it’s called a Donald Sutherland
You can always drink straight whiskey if you order a good one like Jack Daniels. I sometimes order our local Utah one, High West, on ice. The Sazarac is my favorite whiskey cocktail. It’s rumored to be the very first cocktail, invented in New Orleans. It’s whiskey, bitters, sugar, and a citrus peel in an absinthe-coated glass. It may be hard to come by in regular bars. An Old Fashioned, however, is very similar, plus it is considered a “manly” drink (a favorite of Mad Men’s Don Draper) and is a common cocktail for bartenders to make. The Manhattan is like a whiskey-based martini. Here is a page of whiskey cocktails: http://www.saveur.com/article/-/Whiskey-Cocktails
A whiskey sour is a good way to drink whiskey if you get tired of coke. I’m also partial to Lynchburg lemonade, which is Jack and lemonade served in a tall glass. An Old Fashioned is a good choice as well.
If it happens to be Kentucky Derby season, bourbon still counts as whiskey, bartenders tend to stock the stuff for mint juleps that time of year.
Now to get to your definition of what is non-whiskey. Generally, bourbon and scotch are considered types of whiskey, and those who enjoy Tennessee whiskey (Jack Daniels) typically enjoy these too, as well as Canadian whiskey and blended whiskey.
If you want something very whiskey-ish, the Four Horsemen – 1 part bourbon whiskey, 1 part Tennessee whiskey, 1 part scotch whiskey, and 1 part Irish whiskey. 1/2 shot of each, in a double shot glass. There is also the Three Wisemen, which is bourbon, whiskey, and scotch mixed in a tumbler, served on the rocks.
If you drink blended whiskey, 7 & 7 is good – Seagram’s 7 and 7-Up on the rocks.
A Rob Roy is scotch, vermouth, and bitters.
Old-Fashioned
– 2 oz bourbon
– 1/4 oz simple syrup
– 3 dashes bitters
combine in rocks glass. add ice. stir well. garnish with shaved orange peel. delicious
