Question by ClaudeC: Can dogs eat tomatoes?
I caught my 15 LB rat terrier eating a tomato. My sister is worried that tomatoes are deadly for dogs, but I was reading around on the internet and the majority of people say their dogs have eaten them and are fine. Do you think my dog is in danger? Are there symptoms I should look for?

Its fine don’t worry! the worst that will happen is that your dog will have an upset tummy and have diarrhea or vomit…..but thats unlikely.

Tomatoes (plant and fruit) contain tomatine, an alkaloid related to solanine. As the fruit ripens, the tomatine is metabolized. Therefore, ripe tomatoes are less likely to be problematic for animals. Clinical signs of poisoning include lethargy, drooling, difficulty breathing, colic, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, widely-dilated pupils, paralysis, cardiac effects, central nervous system signs (e.g., ataxia, muscle weakness, tremors, seizures), resulting from cholinesterase inhibition, coma and death. (This information comes from veterinarians, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.) (All parts of the plant except the tomato itself are poisonous to humans, although some people are sensitive to the ripe fruit also.)
Dogs are not supposed to eat Tomatoes, but I am sure he/she will be fine as long as he/she doesn’t eat anymore. Grapes are the same way and my pit/lab mix ate some as did my cockapoo. Both were sick and had diareaha, but they were fine. I think he/she might have an upset tummy but that is about it. If your dog gets violently ill, then be sure and head straight to the vet, but otherwise, it should be okay.
Good luck with your baby!
NO. but is your dog didn’t eat that much she will probably be fine…

Tomatoes also contain atropine, which can cause dilated pupils, tremors, and heart arrhythmias. The highest concentration of atropine is found in the leaves and stems of tomato plants, with less in unripe (green) tomatoes, and even less in ripe (red) tomatoes.
Hi,
I suggest that you observe your dog carefully. If something goes wrong like vomiting or diarrhea, you should take her to the vet.
