Question by dtenders: How long before spoiled food gives off a smell?
Specifically, tomato-based pasta, burgers (sandwiches, not patties only), milk, fried chicken and sardines. All of them non-refrigerated. I’m working on a story and need this detail.

It would actually depend on the weather and humidity – and which part of the world you were in. Generally, for warm climate, the smell would start after about a 12-14hrs. The smell would only be when you actually sniffed the food but would get progressively worse and start to permeate the air as time went on….Hope this helps

  1. I was wondering, do you think it would work if i added some qourn ‘mince’ to this recipe? i usually like it on top of my pasta, and this sauce recipe looks nice, so i’d like to combine the two lol :)

  2. To answer your question on that, it’s hard to say because it all depends on what is going to spoil. I know for sure that if you put milk in the freezer, it can hold for about 3 months without spoiling. Bread is the same way, you freeze it, and it can hold for around 4-5 months maybe even longer. I should know because I do it all the time and it works wonders when I need milk and/or bread but don’t want to go to the store. it’s all right there and that’s convienent.

  3. When a food gets spoiled, bacteria starts to grow in them.

Spoiled foods almost start to give off a nasty smell as soon as the spoilage process begins. In advanced stages of spoilage, there are more bacteria, more bacteria gives off more smell.

  4. It gives off a smell when its not spoiled, so then it would start giving off a smell as soon as it starts spoiling.

  5. You should do your own research if you are working on a story.

Leave tomato based pasta, burgers, sandwiches not patties only, milk, fried chicken and sardines out on your own counter as long as you like. Eat /drink/smell them, then write your research paper when you are done puking or out of the hospital

Beware……..foods spoil before giving off a bad smell. Salmonella rings a bell
