  1. In order to know this answer, you need to determine your average last frost date. If you go to this page and scroll down, you will find a map that should tell you generically for your area, when your last frost is:

If you think you’re on the borderline between two areas, go with the LATER date rather than the earlier date.

Once you’ve figured out your last frost date, you will need to count backwards from that date to determine when you need to plant your seeds for transplanting out.

Tomatoes need to be started 6 weeks before your last frost, peppers need 8 weeks, and herbs should tell you on the packet how long it takes from seed to transplant. Cabbage can be planted out BEFORE the frost-free date, so check your seed packet to determine how early you should plant them indoors.

  2. You may be surprised at how early you can start some seeds indoors. I have put together an entire planting guide for all of these vegetables and many others. You can find it at : http://getready2garden.com/page7.html

  3. This website has lots of good info on herbs. The site looks new, but I found lots of good information on how and when to grow basil.
