Question by M: How can I prevent white flies?
I grew tomatoes and catnip in a zip up greenhouse last year. Unfortunately, the catnip attracted white flies, which killed everything in the greenhouse. I will not be growing catnip again, just tomatoes and maybe some parsley or carrots. How can I be sure not to have a repeat infestation? Should I spray down the inside of my greenhouse with something? (I prefer not to use poisons, if possible.)
Also, can I reuse any of that soil? I had used a powder to try to kill the flies.
Thanks so much.

Start with new soil. Just clean out the greenhouse with soapy water.
If you see any flies next year use a mild insecticidal soap

I grow it here in PA and it goes nuts. I mean big long vines with huge
leaves. After I’m done taking the leaves off I just stick the stem right
into the ground again then in a couple weeks I have more growing. I guess
they like it hot but with a lot of water. I water my garden frequently when
it’s hot and they take off. I think they think it rained or something lol.
John I would love to get some of those tree collards. Maybe you could sell
some like your Jerusalem Artichokes!!
how long is this place going on?
Great video. I like your last statement about money and biodiversity. Very,
true and possibly very likely to happen.
I am absolutely serious. While the weather is getting hotter overall, I
will have a video on this soon. Many people may live in places where it
doesn’t stay hot for prolonged periods of time, who need some cool climate
tomatoes for them to perform well. There is ~2 minutes dedicated to sharing
information about the cool climate tomatoes in this video. Fast forward if
you are not interested in it. In addition, this video was pre-recorded a
few weeks ago. Should I wait until winter to post it?
I’ve never heard any person say betterly. Is that how you spell it?
great info thanks
100th like!!!!!!!!!
Awesome tour.
Have to watch this over again and take notes! Love it!
Its best to do #2 in the compost toilets as shown in this video. Of course,
some people may slip up, and its ok, but they ask you only doo in the
toilet. Some composting toilets have a seperator seat that will seperate
out the liquids and the solids. The liquids usually can just be diluted and
then used as fertilizer. I prefer just to pee on my plants.. and YES, this
will be a video one day
Thanks for the info.
John, this is an amazing report…totally spontaneous and real…authentic!
You’re ready for prime time TV, kid!
GOLDEN MIDGET! I ordered that one from Baker Creek’s website, along with
many other plants… SO EXCITED!
ABUTILONS!!!! That’s what those are, been trying to find out what they were
for weeks now after I saw them growing as decoration at a restaurant.
Thanks John.
Liking the longer videos!
Growing the Moon and Stars melons down here in New Orleans…They are doing
great with my compost and tea…Thanks for all the help John. By the way,
Diatomaceous Earth powder and Neem oil saved my strawberries from pests
like slugs and worms and I didn’t have to use harsh chemicals..If I can do
it, anyone can, just keep growing on.
What was the name of the russian melon?
John, you really crack me up in the toilet segment. I so needed the laugh.
have you grown the green tomatillos? I have for the last several years from
sold seeds, and they did well. this year I took the seeds from a fruit, and
I have very tall thriving plants, lots of flowers, but after a month of
flowers, not a single fruit. what causes flowers no fruit? too much
nitrogen in soil? gmo fruits don’t reseed?
Thank you for this video. I’m a college student living in Idaho. I have a
pretty good size balcony with lots of sun so I’m trying to grow some
tomatoes and other things. Its almost June and it is still cold, rainy and
windy here. This video was very helpful! There is hope after all 😀
You and your potty talk.
man i wish we had a nursery like that in north mississippi! that’s awesome!
love it!!
Living in Denver, with a shorter growing season than most, I appreciate the
information on cool weather tomatoes. Thank you John!
I live in zone 4/5 and my Elbe tomatoes and Dufresne tomatoes from seed are
doing fantastic, overtaking the plants purchased from the nursery. Super
hardy varieties imo
go to the ‘defenders’ website. they sell nematodes for nearly everything. i,m sure they.ve got them for white fly. i get them for vine weevils, excellent stuff & not expensive & of course no chemicals. just follow the instructions, very easy.
