Question by Mermaid: can I grow watermelons were I previously grew corn, bell peppers, and tomatoes the year before?
I grow a garden every year. Next year I plan on only growing watermelon and pumpkins, however, this pass year I grew tomatoes, bell peppers, and corn in the plot. Will this cause a problem with my future watermelons? Also, has anyone used a drip system using plastic two liter bottles? How well did it do?

  1. Yes, you can grow watermelons in there next year. As you know any kind of melons need a lot of room to grow. Just make sure you have the room for them to vine out. I have seem people use the drip system with plastic bottles, but I never have. It seems like it worked pretty good.

  2. Yes you can. Watermelons are not in the same family as any of the others you named. The site helpfulgarderer.com lists the families of plants that should be rotated along with many other helpful hints. I have never used plastic soda bottles for drip watering on a garden wide scale but it works quite well in planters. I’m sure it would work in the garden as well.

  3. You may certainly grow watermelons and pumpkins in the same area of your garden.

There are a couple of things you can do to be a successful watermelon grower. First thing they need is lots of water, so your liter bottles will not be sufficient. You need to water them at least once per week, let the garden hose run on low pressure for about 1 hour. You will also need to give them fertilizer once per week. Gardeners who grow the best watermelon always use Neptune’s Harvest Fish & Seaweed. Using it once per week will ensure a bountiful crop!

    Good luck with your garden.

  4. Absolutely. You can definitely grow watermelons where other vegetables were growing the year before. Same thing with pumpkins. Just make sure you have enough space for both.

The following links have lots of good info about planting, watering, fertilizing and harvesting watermelons and pumpkins.

    Good luck!

  5. No problem! Just make sure your soil is fit for watermelon and you’re good to go.

  6. No problem, watermelons are very easy to grow
