Question by SarahBB: What goes with tomato soup and grilled cheese?
I’m having a dinner party and I want to serve comfort foods with a little bit of class. I’m making home made tomato soup and fancy grilled cheese sandwiches. I would like to have one other main component to the entree and a few finger food appetizers and a dessert. Any ideas? Thanks!
Oh yeah we love bacon and aren’t too big on veges but we do like salads. And I’m cooking for my new mother in law! So something easy but impressive would be nice.
I was going to put bacon in some of the sandwiches actually…should have said that, sorry.

The ultimate comfort food:
OVER-THE-RAINBOW MACARONI & CHEESE
Singer Patti LaBelle says that the sure sign of a good cook is if their macaroni and cheese will make you cry! According to Oprah, Patti’s version just might bring tears to your eyes. She developed this recipe when she was Elton John’s back-up singer.
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 pound elbow macaroni
8 tablespoons (1 stick) plus 1 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded Muenster cheese
1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded mild Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded Monterey Jack
2 cups half-and-half
1 cup (8 ounces) Velveeta , cut into small cubes
2 large eggs , lightly beaten
1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly butter a deep 2 1/2-quart casserole. Bring the large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the oil, then the elbow macaroni, and cook until the macaroni is just tender, about 7 minutes. Do not overcook. Drain well. Return to the cooking pot.
In a small saucepan, melt eight tablespoons of the butter. Stir into the macaroni. In a large bowl, mix the Muenster, mild and sharp Cheddar, and Monterey Jack cheeses. To the macaroni, add the half-and-half, 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheese, the cubed Velveeta, and the eggs. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer to the buttered casserole. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese and dot with the remaining one tablespoon of butter.
Bake until it’s bubbling around the edges, about 35 minutes. Serve hot.
Serves 4-6.
Def a nice salad with lots of vegies. Not classy, but I love potato chips with the combo. Since it’s kind of casual, you could do an ice cream sandae bar with lots of different toppings, so everyone could make their own. (-: Good luck cooking for your new mom-in-law.
I was thinking, bacon or some shaved maple ham.
A veggie side dish of broccoli would be great with tomato soup and grilled cheese. A mixed green salad with a light dressing would also be a good choice. Earthy appetizers like stuffed mushrooms or asparagus in a vinaigrette, or garlic toasts, would be good choices.
Here’s a yummy appetizer:
Ceviche (Say-vee-chay) You can eat it by itself, with tortilla chips or tortillas. Hope you like it.
Cooked Shrimp cut into pieces
1/4-1/2 bunch Cilantro-chopped
1/4-1/2 Onion or 1 small onion-diced
2-3 Tomatoes-diced
3-4 limes
Salt and pepper
Stir everything together. The reason for more or less on the ingredients, is how much or how big of each ingredient. It’s really all about the shrimp. You can eat by itself or with chips. Oh, and if you don’t like a ton of lime, I would start out with one, and taste. Add more if there isn’t much lime taste.
Another appetizer idea is to serve “non-finger” appetizers in a really small glass with toothpicks or utensils. (I did veggies with the dip already on the bottom of glass. There was no mess and no worries of double dippers.)
Another idea is to serve a shrimp cocktail…on ice! I’ve done this many times and people always ooh and aah. Definitely impressive. (See after this paragraph for instructions.) Some tips though. If you have a small, med., and lg. bowl, use the small and large bowl. Put a slice of lemon or lime about 1/2 inch thick on the bottom. Then put the bowls together, tape them on four sides. Then slice thin pieces of lemon or limes (or both) and slip it between the bowls. Add cilantro, parsley, or celery leaves or other for some greenery. Then add the water last. Keep in the freezer for at least 24 hours before using. I put my shrimp hanging on the rim of the ice bowl with the cocktail sauce in a small bowl in the middle. http://www.marthastewart.com/article/ice-bowls
This dessert is simple, but you can make homemade whip cream to top it off and add some springs of mint when served for presentation.
No Name Dessert: From my mother.
About 1/2 pint of strawberries, sliced.
2-3 bananas sliced
1 1/2 TB sugar
2-3 good size dollops of sour cream (Start with 2)
Stir together. If you like bananas, add more or less. Same goes with the strawberries. Add more sugar if it needs to be a little more sweet. If the sour cream is too thick, add a little more sugar. The sugar “melts” the sour cream.
Make some ants on a log — celery peanut butter and for the ants use raisins and dried cranberries.
Set out black and green olives and dill and sweet pickles on a tray.

There’s a nice bakery/restaurant in this area which puts roasted serrano peppers and sliced tomato inside their grilled cheese sandwiches, which are made on multi-grain breads.
They offer a simple spring greens salad with a nice vinaigrette.
They also add some gently sauteed onion if requested. (And they use swiss cheese!)
Well,
The first thing I thought of was salad. Only because you can start any meal with a salad, or serve it alongside. I’d make a mixed green salad with different lettuces, maybe some spinach, and the toppings of your choice, with a vinaigrette on top.
As for other sides, it’s kind of hard to match grilled cheese to things… The one thing I like with grilled cheese is french fries. A lot of upscale restaurants here in Los Angeles serve shoestring fries topped with fresh chopped parsley, parmesan cheese, and a little garlic salt.
You could serve potatoes I guess… Here are a few I like:

As for dessert, here are a few suggestions. I don’t know what kind of thing you were thinking about making, so I have a few suggestions:

And the finger food or appetizers… My mom always sets out guacamole and corn chips, sometimes spanikopita which are Greek phyllo pastries with cheese and spinach, or onion dip and salsa with chips. Here are a few more:

Good luck on your dinner!!!! I’m sure your mother-in-law will be impressed and grateful no matter what you end up making!
Put basil in the soup, that will make it more colorful and flavorful. A salad with mixed greens and a balsamic vinagrette would be perfect. As for finger food, I think a fish dip would be nice with some crackers. For dessert, some homeade cookies or a fresh fruit pie, maybe blueberry or cherry with whipped cream. Yum!
