Question by OMG: Can I plant a tomato plant in a bag and hang it somewhere?
I have 40 tomato plants ,but I live in an apartment. Which mean I don’t have place to plant. I want to have my tomato plants hanged around my little yard . if possible, will they have tomatoes?

Yes, you can, and they make special potting bags out of reinforced material (sort of like plastic burlap) where the plants hang upside down for this. I’ve got a couple on my porch now.

  1. Hi weloveourohana, Our favorite low cost solution is seaweed fertilizer, we pick it up on the beach, put it in a bucket and cover with water, several days later we pour it on our tomatoes. You need calcium for blossom end rot and seaweed is great for that as are washed, crushed eggshells or gypsum added to the soil when you plant. Some add limestone but we don’t see that working when it dries out. Hope this helps, good luck!

  2. hey do you have any tips for those working with a tight budget i don’t think i could afford all those fancy fertilizers

  3. Great video, have you ever heard of rock dust?

  11. Great video(s), I had to subscribe! Do you have any ideas on keeping bugs away from my tomatoes? Last year, I had some stink bugs and others eat my beauties right before they were ready. I used Neem oil to no avail. Prefer to use a non-chemical, natural approach. Thanks, Loren!

  12. Keep in mind, calcium pills (super crushed) from the $ store work for bottom end rot as well.

  13. Is all poo manure? Or does the source make a difference? Don’t all these creatures have weird parasites?

  14. yeah, didn’t know you could do that.

  15. Thank you for the informative video. I can’t wait to get to planting my tomatoes. Its going to be such fun.

  16. Hi McMort12, we live in Austin, Texas and we water our in ground tomatoes twice a week and our container tomatoes daily during 100F (38C) degree days and feed all with a natural sea weed fertilizer monthly. If you live near the ocean and can harvest sea weed that washes onto shore, pick some up, rince and store in a bucket with fresh water for a few day, then use it for your tomatoes. Works great, it’s free and you can use the same sea weed several times. Good Luck!

  17. excellent! thank you for stating ( on your last video) that you dont need a compost starter! if you think you do need a little something extra PEE will do just fine…has alot of nitrogen…but must be composted. If you are going to Pee and use then you must delute it 1 part pee 20 parts water! thats how potent it is!

  18. This was really great, thank you so much. Can’t wait to start.

  19. Water one day a week for tomatoes in Land O Lakes, Florida (in April) and you will have a lot of dead tomato plants… just saying.

  20. this was amazingly informative. You’re right, I’ve made the mistake of watering my tomatoes every single day and there are a lot of leaves and only some tomato growing very slowly.

  21. Could you use crushed egg shell powder instead of gypsum to put in the tomato plant hole before you plant it? Thanks.

  22. Why would you use kelp and cotton? The oceans are now very toxic and the cotton plants in India killed the livestock that feed on the plants. If you have your own chickens, I would recommend using crushed egg shells for a calcium source. I like the peanut trick.

  23. I really enjoy your videos. A couple of questions though. Does the 1-1-1-2 “Meals” fertilizer recipe work for the other veggies I’m growing? Specifically, cabbages, peppers, carrots, radishes, herbs, cucumbers, melons, and several types of squash? I already assume it will be good for cherry tomatoes and tomatillos. Correct?

  24. Love this! Chock full of tips and very articulate.

  25. powdered or granular agricultural gypsum Does it make a difference
    Thanks for the great video

  26. Yes. But it is not very popular, the bags/buckets become very heave, have to be watered more often, wind blows them back and forth. Please read this link:

  27. I’ve never used a bag, but I do use buckets. I first used a hanging flower basket of medium size, but I found that I can’t keep it moist enough. I switched to a five gallon bucket, and it’s perfect. These plants do better than those that I plant in the ground. The plant actually hangs upside down from the bottom of the bucket, and you can then plant flowers or herbs in the top. Remember to water regularly, and use a thick layer of mulch to retain moisture.
