Question by trudywarren: I have not been medically able to grow a garden this year and would like to grow tomatoes in containers.?
Physically I have not been able to have a garden for the first time in 37 years. I want to plant tomatoes in containers. I have very large containers and live in Western Ky. Is it too late to put some out now and what are some tips to grow beautiful, tasty tomatoes?

Definitely not too late. Pick a sunny spot. Fertilize about every two weeks. “Patio” is a variety bred for container growing. Quite decent, but other varieties are even better for taste.

  16. Your plants look great as always! Do you do any seed saving with all of
those heirloom types or do you just choose wisely when grabbing seeds in
    the spring?

  17. Thanks JT, very great to hear! I do save seeds. Usually its very hard to
tell which tomatoes came from which plant, however this year i carefully
labelled, and look forward to collecting and storing all of my heirloom
varieties! I also keep a small premium crop from the best of the tomatoes,
from good tasting to nice looking and cool attributes..well see how many
seeds i can get this year, i do tend to share more than I probably should!
Thanks for watching and the kind words, enjoy!

  18. Thank you so much CK, I sometimes do wish I was a Cali Kid, and was able to
soak in that year round sunshine! I do love it out there, very good energy
and people! I like this method for peppers too. Think may do a pruning
video when I take them indoors. I wish you the best with your garden and
harvest too! Im sure it will be a good one for us all, thanks again!

  19. Hi JJ – great info! Because we have such a long growing season here in So
Cal – I usually just let my toms grow and do not trim them back until they
obstruct a pathway in the garden. However, some of my plants are not
producing much bc they are shaded by other plants. I think I will try this
method to try to get some more production out of those pants. You have such
a soothing voice – and are very knowledgeable! good luck with your tomato
    harvest!

  20. I grow tomatoes in 5 gallon plastic buckets all the time. Drill 5/16 or larger hole in the bottom and put some mesh in the bottom to keep the dirt in. Put some potting soil in and bury the tomato almost all the way. watch the water level. They are good.

  21. we grow our tomatoes in large containers every year we have found that better boys do very well as well as cherry’s and the old fashion yellows just place in a sunny area and tend to them the same as if they are in a garden good luck

  22. Oooh! I live in Western Kentucky, too! How do you do, neighbor.

Know where the Amish community is near Mattoon? If you can go, yourself or maybe have someone take you, they had some tomato plants for hanging containers. I kid you not. I got some last month, and while the tomatoes, themselves, are not big — they are numerous!!! I don’t have them in hanging baskets, although I could. I just put them in big pots. I did put a cucumber plant in a pot on a high container, and I’m going to get some garden netting to spread out below it and see what happens.

Good luck — I’m not feeling very chipper, myself.

  23. No..it’s not too late. Make sure the containers at at least 5 gallons and get at least 6 hours of sun a day. They will dry our quicker in containers so water when needed using the “finger in the soil” test. Use a good quality potting mix and mix in some compost. Make sure they will be able to get some support once they get big.
