Question by quisp007: How can I get my tomato plants to bloom?
This is the second year my tomato plants haven’t bloomed or produced tomatoes. I bought the plants in 4″ containers and they appear healthy. What do I need to do to get these plants to do what they’re supposed to? Thanks for your help!

This is the no. 1 rule of gardening fruiting plants, DO NOT FERTILIZE while or right before your plants are supposed to bloom (usually in new growth). Fertilizing your plants right before or while they are blooming will cause the plant to try and make new vegetation which will cause it to not make flowers which means no fruit, also once your plant focuses on making new vegetation it does that until winter, while the plant is making extra leaves it almost completely ignores preparing for winter and will easily die in frosts that would naturally be a piece of cake to survive.
My advice is find out when your tomatoes are supposed to flower and dont fertilize a month before that and until the flowers have died.

@CanarsieBK Well we get winds of about 120 m/h in August. I’m sure
California is gentler 😉
@Illchangeitlater Good call. Can most certainly do something like that.
Thanks.
@jihadacadien Gee thanks for the encouragement. Hahaha. I need to create a
trellis or tomato cage for when it gets bigger, but this will do for now.
@missmetalflower Um, thanks.
Why don’t you just tie the plant to the rails instead of the string? It
will look much tidier like that.
Hope you don’t have a lot of wind. I did this last year with cuccumbers and
one windstorm and they got beaten so bad they died.
@GospelTruth37059 Thanks.
@jihadacadien Those winds you get up there or hurricanes?
@CanarsieBK Lol nope just wind…last Fall it ripped out most of my beets
lol! (But that was unusual)
You have the gift of helps, how nice.
I might also add that using chemical fertilizers isn’t a great idea. Too much too fast. Organic fertilizers are like “slow release” chemical fertilizers. I grow all my plants from seed and go completely organic. To my knowledge the plants sold in the little pots are heavily fertilized with chemicals to get them ready for market ASAP. I have never had a problem getting tomatoes to produce an (over) abundance of fruit.
