The drain holes will do the trick. I the coconut coir soaks up the water
and holds it and the roots will actually suck it out of the coir. I did
this last year with grow bags and it worked great.
When its not raining we are in the mid to high 90’s. Im pretty sure my
tomatoes will be toasted from all this rain.

You can use potting soil and compost, but it will dry out much faster. The
coir retains moisture and makes the mix lighter for better root growth, I
believe.

I don’t like to take chances on that. It’s some seriously nasty stuff.
Nuking the shells doesn’t take away from the calcium it can provide.
Could you possibly tell me what type of moisture control potting soil did
you use?

Mr. R, this is off topic but I know yr interested in weather, did you hear
the very sad news about weather scientist Tim Samaras , his son and Carl
young dying in the tornado on Friday ? He was a great chaser and one of the
top guys in tornados and lightning research . The news is just very sad.
Thanks for the reply. When I listened again I heard you say you used cat
litter buckets. Have you seen the tower from found objects? I would love to
know where she got the barrels. I have seen some double buckets one inside
another and with a little open basket in the bottom and the plants and dirt
in the top and just water in the bottom but the roots go down in the little
basket to the water. There are overflow holes in the bottom sides just
below where the bottom bucket

Did you put a yellow bucket inside a green bucket with holes in the bottom
of the yellow bucket? I wondered since I didn’t seeyou put any rocks in the
bottom so figured you needed to have someway to aerate roots and keep water
from rotting them.
