Question by Jessie: I want to start the grapefruit diet. I need to lose 55 lbs. by July 4, 2007. How well does it work?
I have this plan to follow:
Breakfast – 8 oz. grapefruit juice (unsweetened)
2 eggs and style
2 slices of bacon
Lunch- 8 oz. grapefruit juice (unsweetened)
salad w/ any dressing
meat any style any amount
Dinner – 8 oz. grapefruit juice (unsweetened)
salad any dressing
meat any style any amount
Bedtime Snack: glass of tomato juice or 8 oz. skim milk

How much weight do you generally lose on this diet and how long does it take?
Please only people who have tried this diet…I have already read everyone else’s opinion.

  1. I dont think that the meat and the dressing being anything you want will work

    If u had 5 pieces of Fried chicken and half a bottle of thousand island dressing your not going to get very far.

    I would go with baked chicken no skin
    something like that

  2. diet is not a sprint – its a way of life. you cant go “on” and “off” diet or you will end up as a yo-yo dieter.
    find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
    dont try to lose more than 1-2lbs a week – its not healthy to lose more.
    eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
    5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
    8 glasses of water
    have complex carbs for breakfast – they give you energy
    have lean meat (protein) for dinner – repairs muscle
    cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
    dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried – no junk food

  3. I tried it and didn’t lose. I dumped the juice and added more meat , cheese and veggies, making it low carb. So far I’ve lost thirty six pounds. My friend lost twenty five in three weeks. Too many carbs and your body thinks it’s fall and wants to store fat and hibernate. I have as much energy now at 43 as I did at 13.

  4. I did that like 5 years ago. It’s good if you wanna shed like 5-10 lbs(it took me about 10days to shed 7lbs), but unfortunately, its not a long-term thing. Eventually, your body will get used to it and your weight loss will cease. Its also not the healthiest diet in the world(I know you don’t wanna hear that). But, try medifast(medifast1.com) or for a healthier option the idiot proof diet(i think its idiotproofdiet.com, if not, do a yahoo search) It is very inexpensive and healthy. It says you can lose up to 9lbs in 11 days over and over until you reach your goal weight. I did lose 8lbs in 1 week on it, but I didn’t stick to it. Its really neat! It allows you to pick your own (regular no chef needed)food and it allows 3 cheat days per cycle. Give it a try. If you are unable to find it, feel free to email me.

  5. All fad diets, including this one, ultimately fail. The problem with them is that they encourage people to cut calories by comletely eliminating food groups or macronutrients. This leads to malnutrition.

    What I see here is a serious lack of good fats and complex carbs, as well as bad protein sources. Though these diets claim that you can eat as much saturated fat or cholesterol you want, this simply isn’t true. Also, you’re missing out on the very important antioxidants and fiber content of the good fats and complex carbs.

    The right approach is to skip the fad diet and go with a sensible and healthy balanced diet, where the emphasis is on portion control and healthy food choices. You should eliminate all processed carbs, fatty meats and the bad salad dressings (these are LOADED with fats and even carbs). Typically, 5-6 smaller meals per day is optimal, with the bulk of the carb intake occuring earlier in the day. If your diet is around 1600 calories, for instance, 1600/6 = ~260 calories per meal. This should be the minimum caloric intake per day you get.

    If you do not receive the proper amount of healthy calories per day, your body enters a catabolic state where bodyfat is retained but muscle tissue is used for energy. Also, fat has a high concentration of calories that are readily stored as bodyfat.

  6. There is no secret pill or diet that is going to make you lose weight our bodies were design to consume calories so these starving diets never work. If you want to lose wait the right way and keep it off instead of losing 55 pounds and can’t even enjoy what you like to eat than gain it all back in a month. Than try balancing your calories, protein, carbs, and fats to your body weight. Also try making some realistic long goals, most of the client I get want to lose all this weight in such a short time, look around you what happen to all the people that were suppose to follow there New Year workout plan they didn’t lose 30 pounds in 2 weeks so then all they can say is the diet didn’t work, or I just can’t lose any wieght. A year or 2 make real goals possible. I can lose 20 pounds in a week but I will look like I am wearing a plastic body suit or I can do it the scientific, healthy way and lose 1-2 pounds a week and not have to worry about gaining it if I go out to dinner on saturday.   8. My Friend lost like 50 lbs in 2 months off this diet. I am now on it also and I have lost 4 lbs in like 2 days. You have to do it exact though, also I suggest you work out too so you will be toning. After you work out, eat fruit though. You will have grat success as long as you are determined!
