Question by jmw: Question about growing tomatoes?
So, I want to grow tomatoes. If I start them in March, will I have green tomatoes by May? I’m asking because I’m having a spring soiree and fried green tomatoes are on the menu. I’d like to make the dish w/ tomatoes I grow myself. Also, what kind of tomatoes are best for that?
Opinions? Facts are welcome too. Thanks.

if that is your plan, I suggest you make another cause that one is not going to work.

You can grow tomatoes in pots inside.
Tomatoes need warm soil, sun, heat and airflow. March is not hot enough. If you go to the bottom of the page and click on the info about tomatoes, information will come up.

From seed, it’s usually several months. You’d need to start them inside earlier than March, like maybe NOW. And you’d need supplemental grow lights, or they’ll just grow tall, weak and leggy.
The further south you are, the more likely you can get green tomatoes by May. If you’re more northerly, I’d say it’s really unlikely.
In California, I start tomatoes at the beginning of February, and set them in the ground mid-March to mid-April, depending on the microclimate–frost here at that time of year depends on elevation. The plants are usually setting tomatoes on the first truss of the vine by the end of May, but they’re just starting at that point.
It will be hard getting green tomatoes of appreciable size by the end of May, unless you start seeds indoors now, pot them up as needed, then set them in the ground as larger plants as soon as frost danger is over. A lot depends on where you live–if you’re in the south, it may work, but probably not anywhere else. If you’re new to starting tomatoes from seed, you can find out more at http://www.grow-it-organically.com/starting-tomatoes-from-seed.html
Use salad tomatoes if you’re going to do this–larger beefsteak tomatoes won’t set fruit early in the season. ‘Early Girl’, ‘Green Zebra’, and ‘Carmello’ are good varieties, but you can find more here:

Good luck!
Unfortunately most likely not. If you want to be producing tomatoes in May you want to start them by the end of this month, or sooner. You will need a big container to transplant them into when they are six to eight weeks old to give the roots room to grow.
Tomatoes also need light and heat, a minimum of 8-10 hours a day to produce flowers and set fruit. If you are not growing outside you need a window that can give them all this, or purchase an inexpensive grow light off Amazon for them. Get a proper tomato fertilizer, and follow the instructions, and some composted manure, they like a lot of nutrition.
Good luck
I raise tomatoes from seed every year. In the Northeast, I start them in Mid April and they give me my first red tomato in late August. I’m not sure if you can make the green harvest unless you have strong sunlight and heat in the south.
