Question by frances c: Does anyone know of a pill that you give your dog that will stop their urine from burning out the lawn?
Our dog (golden retriever) is ruining the lawn. I’ve tried giving him diluted tomato juice and spraying the lawn with water as soon as he goes. That can get rather hard to do all the time.

There is no pill but I have a wonderful solution…Take him to the neighbors lawn….

Oh my god. Why would you want to medicate your dog? That’s cruel. You should train your dog to pee on the concrete when you walk him. If you can’t be bothered and you prefer a beautiful lawn, then you should find a new home for the dog. Uric ACID is caustic; and so is tomato juice ACID. Also, tomato-based products are bad for any dog’s stomach. I heard an animal specialist say that it causes canine stomach cancer.
Urine contains ammonia, and that is what is burning your lawn. Ammonia is a toxic waste product eliminated by the body after nutrients have been processed, so there is nothing you can do about it. You can minimize the damage by designating particular places for your dog to pee and then always taking him there until he understands that he cannot pee anywhere else. Or, you can walk him to a park and let him do his business there (take plastic bags to pick up solid wastes, of course.)
