Question by Keep Asking: How can I get large container for large tomatoes plants???
Moved here last year and I have a ground floor apartment. I have a small 8 x 8 patio with a table and chairs. Next to the patio my landlord created a small gap space for landscaping so he can cut the lawn with his tractor. I got room in this small gap space for 5 maybe 6 very large flower pots. I was thinking of getting 6 whiskey half barrels for tomatoes plants that I just ordered through a catalog. I have about 6 weeks to find something to plant them in. (BTW, these are supose to be prolific producers). I need to figure out where I can get giant pots like those half barrels. I don’t have a lot of money as in I don’t want to spend more than 5-10 bucks each or I’d prefer to get them free somehow. Any suggestions?

I saw a neat idea on t.v….but instead of buying what they had, I’m gonna make my own.

They are “hanging” tomato plants. Instead of letting your plant’s hit the ground and spending all that time keeping them off the ground, I’m going to buy a plastic container, like for storage or something (that would be in your price range, like mine!) and cut a small hole in the bottom and stick the plant through and pack it good to make sure it doesn’t fall through. Then you won’t get any ruined from laying on the ground and maybe save you some room. Just an idea. Hope this helps. Good luck with your tomato plants!

  1. try freecycle.com. great place! I’ve given away lots of good un-needed stuff and gotten some my self!

  2. Try the local household tip people throw away plenty of containers, ask them to keep a few for you. but make sure they are properly cleaned b4 use

  3. I did what shari is talking about if you would like i could send you pictures and how i made my own.
Contact me with a e-mail address to send to.

  4. i think i saw real half whiskey barrels at lowes once but they were $ 15.00 ea. that’s actually as cheap as i’ve seen them. everywhere else they were more. alittle more than you wanted to spend but they last a few years and would work well for tomatoes. put a cage on the plant so it grows up. eventually the plant will cover the cage. they look great on the patio.
