A Complete Video Guide for Growing Heirloom Tomatoes: Start to Finish

This is the growth of the same tomato plant ‘Black Krim’ from start to finish. I spliced together my 6 videos to create A Complete Guide for Growing Heirloom…

Question by connor: Should i replant my tomato plants?
I planted my tomato plants about a week and a half ago. We have had a night where it got down to 35, so we put a tarp over it. A few days later, they are droopy and brown. a slight touch of green. We have also had a inch of rainfall. we put some miricle grow over it, though it was a potter plant for flowers mix. should i replant? they are like husky cherry red, early girls, celebrities, big boys and other common stuff
grow zone is 6

i’m in the same boat as you and just asked a similar question. i thought maybe it was the soil pH. my cherry tomatoes, early girls, and beefsteaks are doing the worst. i think you should replace them. i’m definitely replacing mine since they’ve been in the ground for 2 weeks now and they’re not looking too good. we put a tarp over ours during the cold snap too but the cherry tomatoes were looking bad even before that. the guy at the garden center said it could have been too much moisture. anyway, i’d def replace – it’s still early and the plants are cheap.

  1. A Complete Guide for Growing Heirloom Tomatoes

The ‘Black Krim’ is the star of this video. I shot 5 videos in 2012 that
documented all the steps to harvesting tomatoes from a ‘Black Krim’ tomato.

I combined the 5 videos into one video. It covers everything you need to
know to successfully growing tomatoes. I hope!

I figured the video might help with the recent coming cold streak of sub 20
    degree temps here in Maryland.

  2. A great heirloom is the ‘Black Krim’. This video shows a full seasons
growth from transplanting to picking. All your need to know for taking care
    of heirloom tomatoes.

  3. Magic , makes sense and works half a world away .

  16. I got a tomato plant that hasn’t been touched for months. not sure if it’s
going to survive but I got all the suckers off plus branches that were
broken off the main stem. gonna try and make those limbs grow into three
    other plants.

  17. That would be great. Id love to see the results. Good luck.

  18. Good detailed explanation, I am gonna follow each step. And post my result

  19. That is good advice. If you have the time it is a very good idea.

  20. I wouldn’t add lime without a pH test first. If it’s already high adding
lime will make it higher. NPK test should also be done before adding
fertilizer. Test kits are available at garden centres for less than five
dollars. If you have a large garden, it may be worth to get the soil tested
by the local agricultural college. They can recommend the proper amendments.

  21. Good luck. Let me know if you have questions.

  22. Two pounds is impressive. Save those seed!

  23. cool video, you can see also my vidoes :)

  24. Good luck if you have questions, let me know.

  25. So far everything has been great this growing season. Hope yours is great
as well. I grew a 2 pound Roma tomato and it is amazing.

  26. Stressed plants are very prone to secondary problems, including infections, so I’d consider replacing them, as you haven’t lost much growth time, and you run the risk of reduced harvest loads with the current plants.

As Tomatoes are susceptible to viruses, insects pests etc, this is a crop that I wouldn’t risk leaving whilst unhealthy and young, as this creates a long period for them to go downhill. The growth that isn’t a firm healthy green won’t be able to photosynthesise well either, so growth on your current plants is going to be diminished for some time too, and some plants may succumb and die.

The flip side of this, though it involves extra cost and effort, is that you’re only behind by a week or so, and this growth will soon be caught up.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

  27. Sorry you are having problems with your plants we had a lot cool nights and a lot of rain If your soil holds water you will have a hard time growing with the weather you have had that is a hard call on replanting but IF I was in your shoes I would replant I don’t know your grow zone I live in zone 6 I will have time to replant Good Luck

  28. Yes – replant your tomato plants and throw the dead ones into the trash.

Spring planting is sometimes ruined by freak weather. It is just the risk we all take if we try to second guess the weather.
