CHALLENGE – Cherry Tomato

Question by Shauna: What would be the best way for me to build a portable green house?
I rent in a decent sized town, used to live in the country, and would very much love to keep gardening regardless of my location. I have a decent sized back yard, but my problem last year was that animals (raccoons, squirrels, and groundhogs to be specific) were terrorizing my plants. I ended up producing like four cherry tomatoes the entire season.

So I’ve looked into having a greenhouse. I don’t want any of the popup kinds you can buy online – I don’t feel like it falling apart or blowing away. and wasting my money. Since I rent though, I want to build something sturdy, but also something that I can take with me when I move again, which I will eventually do. I would prefer to use a wood/pvc pipes/plastic combination to build.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

I once made a series of glass cloches which were really miniature greenhouses.
Try looking up GLASS CLOCHES on google…
we used ordinary float glass and bent wire as the frames. cost about five dollars each

  3. You need a tradeoff between weight and sturdiness. My personal preference would be for a framework covered by plastic sheeting. The problem is that the sheeting breaks down when exposed to UV light, so you would have to replace it every couple of years.

  4. Long term. 4×8 sheets of Plexiglas’s. On a screw or bolt together metal frame. Build like a shed and number the parts for ease of take down and reassemble. You would need a door and vent fan as well and ground stakes to keep it form moving in the wind.

  5. Get (or build) a geodesic dome. http://www.sunrisedomes.com/greenhouse.html This is the link to a commercial site, there are also sites with plans and instructions for building your own. Good Luck!
