Question by Amaretta: How can you tell when orange or yellow tomatoes are ripe?
With a red tomato, you can use the color, firmness and scent of the tomato as a guide. But how orange should an orange tomato be? How yellow is yellow enough? How do you know when the tomato has ripened enough to be at its best?

you can tell by checking how firm it is. if it’s hard, then it’s not ripe. it should be tender to the touch and shouldn’t be hard at all, but it also shouldn’t be too easy to squeeze or mushy.

  1. They should have a rich color regardless of what color it is. They should also be semi-soft when you squeeze them. Don’t store ripe tomatoes in the fridge either…keep them out in a bowl or something.

  2. Regardless of the color, size, shape or variety of the tomato, the guidelines for finding a ripe tomato are the same. As with all ripe fruits, a ripe tomato will seem heavy for its size. If you’re not sure what this feels like, you can get and idea by picking up several different tomatoes of a similar size and comparing the heaviness.

    Once you’ve found a nice, weighty tomato, hold it up to your nose. Ripe tomatoes have a distinctive garden-fresh aroma.

    Finally, how does the tomato feel? A ripe tomato will be soft when pressed (but not mushy). Again, as with other fruits, you’ll want to avoid tomatoes that are bruised or that have broken skin.
