Question by : Are tomatoes safe to feed to dogs?
Before anyone says anything, I know dogs are carnivores and cannot be fed a vegetarian diet, and I’m not trying to feed my dogs a vegetarian diet. However, I do give certain fruits to my dogs as occassional treats, because they love them (but I never give grapes or raisens).

However, I keep hearing conflicting opinions about whether or not tomatoes are safe for dogs. Some people say they’re fine, others tell me never to feed them because they’re a member of the nightshade family and are, therefore, poisonous to animals. So, which is it? Are they safe or not?

I’ve given both of my dogs cooked tomatoes from spaghetti, and they are still alive and well!

  1. the FRUIT is safe, not the vines, the vines ARE toxic,we have been giving our dog tomato as a treat for years, not on regular occasions, but every now and again, too much will cause diarrhea but it wont kill them, ours is 11 years old.

  2. Yeah, tomatoes are safe.

  3. Hell if tomatoes were poisonous to dogs my chihuahua would have died from them and not old age. She would go out to the garden and eat them. Some of the new dog foods even have them in it along with other vegetables. With the exception of certain small breed dogs they can eat pretty much whatever they want. Just do not be a moron like a friend of mine and feed them marshmallows they will give them the screaming diarrhea.

  4. We have raised Dobe’s for the last 25 years and everyone of them loved pizza and spaghetti sauce. We only give them a little bit but they love it, they just sit and beg for a taste.

  5. Red, ripe tomatoes are safe for dogs to eat. Green tomatoes & the green leafy parts on the tomato plant do contain mild toxins. The toxin exists in the unripe tomato & is metabolized as it ripens. So as long as your dog isn’t in your garden eating unripe tomatoes or the whole plant, he will be fine.

I used to drive a semi & for a while all we EVER hauled was tomatoes & watermelons from farms in Florida to the market in NYC. My oldest dog and I would get out of the truck and walk around the loading area at the farms. Before long, all the pickers, packers & loading employees knew us….because my dog was the only one they’d ever seen who’d do tricks to earn a cherry tomato or a piece of watermelon as a treat. LOL. He ate both on a very regular basis. Never any ill effects, except having BIG poops the next day if I let him eat too much.

If ripe tomatoes were hazardous to dogs, mine would have keeled over dead years ago. All of my dogs enjoy fruits & veggies as occasional treats too. :)
