I’m growing tomato plants and today as it was a nice sunny day, we put them outside for a while and bought them in, unexpectedly they have got yellow spots on the leaves and seem to be suffering from mottling.
Is there anyway to cure this problem?

If they were fine before you set them outside then your plants got sunburned. You should never set a plant grown inside in the direct sun the first time outside. You have to harden them off first so they get used to the UV rays. That means setting them outside in the shade for 2 hours the first time and gradually over the next week or 2 giving them more sun and leave them outside longer. You can also set them out on a cloudy day
If it is sunburn there is nothing you can do. Unless it is severe they will recover and grow new leaves. They may lose some of these leaves first though

John: It was cloudy until about 1 o’clock yesterday and it is cloudy today and it is suppose to be partly cloudy tomorrow and then rain for 3 to 4 days. I have never had a problem with my plants not getting enough sun. After all we live in the SUNNY south, don’t we.
Kimberly: You can tell by the age of my sifter I have been doing it for a long time. This one is my second sifter. The first one wore out. They would last longer if I kept them out of the weather. Pressure treated lumber usually last over 20 years so this box could be that old. Thanks for watching.

My sifter may last a couple more years but some of the wood is rotting. I like it because of its size. I can move my gloved hand around in circles and sift it quicker than using a small screen box.

ya i started my tomatoes a little late this year so there all really tiny but i put them in yesterday anyway.
i may have to go to the store and buy some tomato starts if some of these tiny things dont make

We have had so much rain I am hoping it will get hot and dry out a little so I can plow my garden. I didn’t plant my onions and sugar snap peas because it has been too wet since the end of February to plant them. Our average for the 1st 4 months of the year is 13.1″ of rain. We have had 16.4″ of rain since 1-1-13 and 5.7″ came in March. We must have gotten what you are missing. Keep on plugging it has to get better for both of us. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I try to put them in the ground the 15th of May. This year unless it gets hot it might be the 1st week of July. I will not put them the ground until I have roots coming out of the bottom of the milk cartons I don’t care how long it takes. I will still have larger plants and more tomatoes than everybody else who put them in the ground a month before I do. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE ROOTS! I wish I could get across to all of my viewers who garden. You saw how many tomatoes I still had when I pulled them.
We do too because they stack in our bait freezer. 4 & 8 lbs of ice for free. We also use litre and gallon jugs for ice when we go fishing and we keep the bait and the fish we catch cold with them until we have cleaned them. We use a clean 5 gal. bucket with water and frozen litre bottles to keep the cleaned fish cold while we clean all of the fish and package it for dinner and the freezer. We freeze them in freezer bags or milk carton filled with water and no air. Thawed they taste fresh caught.
I like your sifter so much I built one just like it for myself. Took her for a test drive yesterday and she works perfectly! Love it! I got over 4 wheelbarrows full of fluffy compost. It was only enough for two beds unfortunately. Thanks for the idea.
Debra: No that is a good question. I put about 30 seeds or so in a 4 inch pot and when they get true leaves and roots out the bottom I put them in 6 packs. When the roots come out the bottom of the 6 packs I put them in milk cartons. When they come out the bottom of the milk carton I put them in the ground which usually takes about 30 days. I start my tomato and pepper seeds 60 days before I plan to put them in the ground. I do this on 15th of March. 3-21-13 this year and it has been cold & wet.
Tomatoes are very forgiving. I think that’s part of why I like to grow them so much. Yes, they are good eating. But they will also tolerate me messing up once in awhile. :)

Ug. We’re having the other problem over here in CT. All the rain headed east drys up and stops right before hitting our state. We’re running roughly 4 or 5 inches below average for rainfall. That coupled with unnaturally cold nights (still in the high 30s / low 40s), it’s making for a late start to our garden this year. I have 17 tomatow plants begging to go outside but I still have them under grow lights (their in 1gal pots currently). I’ve started hardening them off but too cold to stay out..
It looks like you’re getting the same weather I’m getting. Poured all day Monday, drizzled all day Tuesday, light rain all day today. They say it’s supposed to be sunny on Friday. I sure could use it. I was late starting my tomato seeds and it looks like it’s working in my favor this time. I moved mine into 4″ pots today.
Good use for cartons. I save mine for ice blocks down here on the coast of Texas.
