Question by newmommie: What’s the best fried green tomatoes recipe you’ve ever tried?
I love love love fried green tomatoes and I found a pretty good recipe for some in one of my old cookbooks but I’d like to try some other ones to see if there’s an even better recipe. Do you have one that you consider to be the best fried green tomatoes recipe?

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

INGREDIENTS
1 extra large egg
4 tablespoons milk
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3 green tomatoes, sliced
DIRECTIONS
In a small bowl whisk together egg and milk. In another small bowl mix cornmeal and flour.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat; use more or less oil to reach about 1/4 inch in depth.
Dredge tomato slices first in egg mixture, then in cornmeal mixture. Carefully place slices in hot oil and cook until browned on both sides.

  1. Classic Fried Green Tomatoes
    4 to 6 green tomatoes
    salt and pepper
    cornmeal
    bacon grease or vegetable oil
    PREPARATION:
    Slice the tomatoes into 1/4 – 1/2-inch slices. Salt and pepper them to taste. Dip in meal and fry in hot grease or oil about 3 minutes or until golden on bottom. Gently turn and fry the other side.

  2. Kentucky Style Fried Green Tomatoes

    If your not frying your green tomatoes in bacon grease then you have lost half of the great flavor! No self respecting southerner fries their green tomatoes in anything but bacon grease!

    INGREDIENTS
    1/2 cup bacon grease
    1/3 cup all-purpose flour
    3/4 cup cornmeal
    1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
    1 egg
    1/4 cup milk
    1 green tomato, cut into 1/4 inch slices
    DIRECTIONS
    Heat the bacon grease in a large skillet over medium heat. In one small bowl, stir together the flour, cornmeal and pepper. In another small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk using a fork.
    Dip the tomato slices into the egg and milk, then coat with the dry mixture. Place the breaded tomato slices in the hot bacon grease. Cook until browned on each side, about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Bacon grease burns easily, so adjust your heat if you need to.

  3. Recipe? Who needs a stinkin’ recipe?

    Slice ’em thin. Dip ’em, both sides, in milk/egg wash. Dredge them through crushed saltines. Fry ’em.

    Salt and pepper them when they’re done, and eat them with ball park mustard on top.

    If you have buttermilk, you should use that instead of regular milk, but regular milk is OK if you don’t. And you use the same “recipe” for eggplant.

  4. Fried Green Tomatoes

    1 large egg
    1/4 cup milk
    1/2 tsp Tabasco
    1 tsp sugar
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp pepper
    1/2 cup cornmeal
    5 medium size green tomatoes, sliced
    2 tbsp oil or bacon drippings

    In a pie plate, whisk the egg, milk and Tabasco. In a cup mix the sugar, salt and pepper. Spread the
    cornmeal on a plate. Dip the tomato slices into the egg mixture, sprinkle with the sugar mixture and then coat with cornmeal.
    In a non-stick skillet, heat 1 tbsp of oil over medium heat. Slide in about half of the tomato slices and
    cook for about 2 minutes on each side, until brown. Do not crowd. Put on paper towels to drain.
    Repeat until all the tomatoes are done.
    Serve these immediately since they will lose their crispiness quickly.

  5. ME ME ME TO TO TO… I learned this from my great grandma.(bless her heart) Egg wash 2 eggs salt and pepper, a shot of hot sauce. Cornmeal w/a little s&p. Firm Sliced green Tomatoes 1/4 to 1/2 thick. Dip in wash then cornmeal then wash again. Cook in a castiron skillet on med. heat. Carefull not to burn. Drain on paper towels. Eat them warm with a little off your favorite dressing. Hope this is a WINNER for you………..

  6. no recipe here just cut up soak in salted water dry off dip in flour/cornmeal fry up and salt and pepper when hot
