Question by Hello.: Why can’t i make sun dried tomatoes in a very hot oven (350 degrees)?
I don’t want to waste gas or time so I was planning to cook the turkey and tomatoes at the same time (for xmas). The turkey cooks 350 degrees for 5 hours. Can i still cook the sun dried tomatoes or will it come out gross/ not work? Are there ways i can still cook the tomatoes in 350 degrees by putting foil on it or something? What can i do to make this work?

I don’t know about you but my oven is one of those places where the sun does not shine.

  1. tomatoes and things like that should be dehydrated, not baked. Dehydration takes a lot of time at a very low oven temp about 175 to 200.

go back to the store and get some sun dried tomatoes.

  2. If you want oven-dried tomatoes, you need to use a lower temperature for a longer time (8-10 hours at 200 degrees). This will extract the moisture from the tomatoes without burning them. If you want to cook the tomatoes with your turkey, look for a recipe for baked tomatoes instead. Here’s one that looks good – http://projects.washingtonpost.com/recipes/2008/08/27/feta-crusted-baked-tomatoes/

  3. This is because you are simply overheating the tomatoes instead of ‘sun-drying’ them.
I use this method to make a similar version of sun dried tomatoes which still taste amazing:
Get some nice cherry tomatoes and cut in half, place on a baking tray and drizzle liberally with some nice olive oil, some mixed dried herbs, salt and pepper and other seasonings which take to your fancy. Meanwhile, heat the oven to gas mark 9 (or a very hot electric/fan oven) and put in the tomatoes. Now, although it sounds strange, turn the oven right off and leave overnight, do not open the oven, leave the tomatoes in. This means if you wanted sun dried tomatoes for tomorrow you would have to leave them over tonight.
By turning of the hot oven and leaving the tomatoes in the oven for a long period of time, the heat surrounding dries the tomatoes yet does not cook and spoil them. The best point is to not open the oven door when it is off to keep in the heat and enable the drying process.
Whee you get up in the morning go to the oven and find your ‘sun dried’ tomatoes – they taste really good!! You can then take them from the oven and store in an airtight container or keep covered on the tray until needed.
    I hope this helps.
    Have a great christmas.

  4. You’d need to do them longer and slower to make it work. Overnight on the lowest setting, with the oven door cracked.
