Question by Monet 2 B: Where can I get good information about vegetable gardening for Florida growers?
Most vegetable gardening books and websites contain information for northern vegetable gardeners. But anyone who tries to grow vegetables in Florida will tell you that Florida’s climates and seasons are nothing like what you would find in other states. For example, a lot of the resources out there assume that your frost dates will begin in November. So instead of saying “such and such plant is cold intolerant” they will say “such and such plant’s growing period ends in November”. This frustrates me to no end because in my zone (between 8 and 9) in Florida I often don’t see frosts until January. Our last Christmas saw temperatures in the 70s! And while Fall begins in August for many northern states, we often have temperatures in the 90s through October. I realize that it is unrealistic for there to be an accurate source of information for every state, but I would like at least find information about the necessary growing temperatures for plants so that I can adapt to my needs instead of going by northern standards and planting too early or too late. For example, after many hours of research I now know that most tomato varieties will produce fewer fruit when experiencing prolonged exposure to temperatures below 70 degrees. So based on this information and on average monthly temperatures for my area, I can probably grow tomatos from April to early July and again from late September to early December (totally different from what most vegetable gardening books and websites will tell you). This is the kind of information I want and am struggling to find. I would appreciate some help with this.

  1. Thanks James, I’m about to get cracking with mine in NZ. How did your crop
    eventuate?

  2. When growing ANYTHING in Florida….place (it) in the ground and it will grow……Since you don’t experience the winter that us northern states do…..there’s nothing else to do except to plant…water…….You’ve enough sunshine (which is the most important for growing veggies) or anything for that matter………..Right? You do get some showers/rain…….sometimes it just takes a bit of “figuring out”, that’s what you’ve been reading….Ignore them since you live in a state where anything will grow……

  3. Try this calendar at all things plants…

Add your zip code to get even more accurate info.
