Heath’s Trout and Heirloom Tomato Salad

Locale’s Head Chef, Heath Dumesny shows us how to whip up this fresh and easy mid-week meal.

Question by mandiesgotfroggiekisses: Why do I get sick when I eat salsa or fresh tomatoes, but I dont get sick if I eat pasta sauce or ketchup?
I seem to have an allergy to tomatoes, but am wondering if its really an allergy or if I am just eating a bad tomato. I am pregnant and have been craving a stuffed tomato sooo bad. I get sick when I eat fresh tomatoes or salsa, or tomatoes on a salad, or burger but not pasta sauce, ketchup, or tomato paste.
I am right around 11 weeks. I haven’t had any tomatoes since finding out I was pregnant so its definately not an adversion to the pregnancy. I can eat oranges and lemons fine! I love ORANGES! YUM!
I HAVE NOT HAD A TOMATO WHILE PREGNANT!!!

Perhaps the salsa and fresh tomatoes are too acidic. You neglected to say what symptom(s) you have when you eat these foods, and how far along you are in your pregnancy. Acid reflux (heartburn) may be your problem.

  1. Ketchup or tomato paste or pasta sauce could be cooked. That could be why you dont have a problem eating them while you do when they are raw.

  2. you know tomatos have ab amount of acid in them may be your body can’t tack it at the moment…. if you throw up now from lemons or oranges then that is probabley what it is. or you might be alerguc to a minral or vitamin in it… hmmmm toughy.. try getting an alergy test done

  3. Uncooked tomatoes cause my sister to get sick also. They are high in acid before they’re cooked. Although they still have acid after being cooked, not nearly as much as raw. Being pregnant is probably making it a little worse, because your system is more sensitive.
