Question by barbie: How can I water a big potted tomato plant while away?
I’m leaving for 4 days and I don’t want my tomato plant to die from lack of water. How can I make sure it stays moist till I get back. It has lots of tomatoes on it and it’s about 2-3 ft. high.

Does it rain in your place? If so, consider setting it outdoors.

  1. Get an empty 2 or 3 liter plastic soft drink bottle. Cut the bottom off and turn it upside down. Find a small stone or piece of gravel and drop it in. The stone should be of a size that will wedge in the mouth of bottle but not drop through. It shouldn’t be so big as to seal it off. To test fill the upside down bottle with the stone with water and it should slowly leak out. Now burrow the mouth of the bottle next to your plant being careful to not tear into the roots of the plant. Tie or prop the bottle to the container holding the plant or the cage holding the plant up. Fill the bottle with water. The soil will also slow the escape of water from the bottle. It should provide enough water to keep your plant alive for 4 days. If the container has enough room you can put more of these upside down bottles in it.

If you search yahoo for http://www.ferndale-lodge.co.uk or ‘drip feeders for plants’ you will find what you need.
Alternatively you could go to B&Q for some capillary matting and leave a large bowl of water next to the plant. Dont forget to feed the plant the day you go as well.
If the plant is in a greenhouse then leave the door open to avoid rapid heat increases should the summer arrive while you are away.
    Have a nice time. Brian.
