Question by Pegasus90: Why would home-grown tomatoes turn brown on the bottom?
My husband is growing tomatoes in our backyard in tubs. For the last 2 years the bottoms start to turn a tannish brown when the tomato is ripening? What are we doing wrong?
My husband says he waters about 1/2 gallon every day or two. What is recommended?

I think that what your describing is blossom end rot. Its caused by to much water. We get this with our tomatoes but its usually only the first ones to ripen. Tomatoes like hot dry weather so try not to water as much.

  1. Your tomatoes have blight.

  2. Sounds like blossom end rot. They may have too much water. A lot of times it is the first ones to ripen that get this. Pick them off and wait for the next ones to ripen and chances are that they won’t have it. But remember to dispose of the rotten ones away from your plants so that they don’t transfer anything.
    Good Luck.

  3. Yes, it is blossom end rot. It is not a disease. It is a nutrient deficiency. Your plant needs calcium.

  4. blossom end rot occurs when you dont provide enough calcium to the plant. combined with iratic watering. when the plant has flowers on it.The plant will show no sign of this till the green tomatoes start to ripen. then the ‘blossom end” turns brown and disgusting. Water it regularly and give it some calcium. The new flowers from that point on will grow nice tomatoes.
