Question by pumpkin: What is an inexpensive tomato planting solution?
I’ve never done anything special when planting my tomato plants. Someone suggested I try something that’s supposed to make them grow better and increase my yield. Well, I don’t have a lot of money to spend buying special ingredients to use in my tomato planting. Is there something inexpensive I can buy? The recipe I got from Volunteer Gardener (blood meal, epsom salts, green sand and bone meal) sounds a bit over my budget.

  1. Tomatoes need potassium mainly. To get a bigger yield just buy a small container full, cheap shops usually sell this.

  2. Buy a small container of Blood and Bone fertilizer. It goes a long way.

  3. I always recommend Miracle-Gro for Tomatoes (not the regular kind). Pour a cup of the mixture on when you plant, and again as per the instructions. Also, we planted under black plastic, which means you lay out a roll of black plastic, making sure you anchor down the edges well. Then cut X’s in it every 3′ or so. Weight a spot down so the X doesn’t blow up, and plant your tomato plant in the X. This will not only keep out weeds, it will also hold in heat and moisture.
