  1. How deep did you set posts? Did you use a stone base, concrete, or just set
them in the soil? This is exactly how i wanted to build my trellis!

  2. You clearly need to read-up on what organic gardening is all about. Its the way the tomatoes are grown that counts. The soil needs to be totally free of chemical additives as does the feed you use. You can buy organic seeds from Ebay Money Maker is probably the most popular

  4. Contact your local master gardeners or university extension service. They will steer you to the right tomato for your location. Also…seeds do matter for organics. Some seed companies sell GM or chemically coated ones.

  5. Organic gardening is all about natural fertilizers. Use compost (combining “brown” and “green” plant matter together). It’s easy to make. Mow your lawn, leave the lawn clippings (green) in a pile somewhere and combine dead plants (brown) together. Mix 50% brown and green stuff together and toss it every few days. It will rot and turn into dark brown soil.

As far as organic seeds go, you can find them at most big box retailers (Lowe’s, Home Depot, Wal-Mart). It only means they didn’t use chemical fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides on the plants that the seeds came from. There is no best organic tomato in my opinion. If you can find a “Lemon Boy” tomato plant, it is definitely worth it to grow. They are a tart and sweet tomato. The easiest to grow are the beefsteak varieties. They are the ones that have a lot of “meat” in them or the more solid parts inside a tomato. It’s very hard to kill them. They are mainly good for sandwiches or hamburgers.

Make sure and get a tomato cage too. Put it around the tomato plants before they get too big or they will fall over. They will grow into them on their own. Also, make sure to water them on a set schedule or else your tomatoes will develop cracks and splits on them. Good luck!

  6. It’s too late in the season to start seeds now. Get whatever plants are being sold in your area and plant them. If you want to grow the plants organically, then research organic approaches to gardening. If you are growing for home use and not selling in the market place, it really doesn’t matter much if the plant started out being grown using chemical fertilizers. Even if you started from seed, it is very difficult these days to purchase potting soil that does not contain chemical fertilizers. The purists will argue it, but the practical aspects are that organic gardening is more dependent on what you do to grow your garden than how a particular plant started it’s life. Unless, of course, you are marketing them.
