how much land do you have? you can lasagna garden if you don’t have a lot of space, and you can always till more and not use it all up, are you planning on putting anything up or eating it all fresh (take all these things into consideration, then read up on how much space eat plant needs (I don’t know enough particulars to give you a good enough idea) keep in mind also that squash needs a lot of room, but you can put tomatoes in hanging planters and green beans can be put on trellises if they aren’t bush beans

  1. Squash and pumpkins and the like are large vines and can take up quite a bit of space. On the other hand, they can be trellis grown as well if your variety is smaller.

Some of your produce will be grown at different times. Lettuce and peas for instance are early spring crops. When it gets too hot, they fade out. You can utilize a space of several feet per person and plant in squares.

I recommend a book called Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew that outlines methods for various sized families and their garden needs. It is extremely helpful in how to plant, where to plant, and what to plant for fruitful gardening with little waste. He also advocates organic gardening as much as possible.

I think many of your question would be answered here and more information available in this book.

Look on-line and you could get a copy at a very reasonable price. I use some of the techniques and find it very useful. It is also fun!

I just found a url on line :

  2. it depends on how much land you have available to garden in. get yourself a piece if graph paper and set out a plant plan. using the squares on the graph, say 4 squares represent 1 square foot, figure how many tomato plants you want, then figure how much room the plant needs and plan a row of tomato’s. green beans can be figured by planting a straight row, say 10 long you should be able to plant 20 plants per side if you use a fence for your beans to climb [pole beans ]make sure to compost well and they will do fine, mine do and my harvest is quite large. I have a family of 2, but provide food for several families and sell some too.. once you have the tomato’s and beans plotted, proceed to the other veggies you want. I have an area 15×15 and I planted tomato’s [10] green beans[15 foot row] zucchini[6] summer squash[6] eggplant[2] peppers[15] cantaloupe[4] watermelon [4] and butternut squash [4] and had ample room for walking except where the melons were planted.

  3. Start small and continue as you have the strength and time…better to keep the plot clean and tidy. Several of the crops you want can overlap with each other thus saving you space.
I have a plot and I’m always wanting to grow more and have more space!, but my advice is start small and within your ability.
In UK in the early part of the last century the government felt that a family’s needs should be met with a veg plot of 300 square yards. There would have been space for soft fruit and fruit trees and permanent crops like asparagas.
Would recommend you research how to grow things thoroughly – it’s worth it.
Below is a very helpful site, but there are plenty of others and the book I depend on is Joy Larkcom’s ‘Grow Your Own Vegetables’. Good gardening!

  4. In the best case where you have unlimited space I would want to have a space to allow a wide bed row of 3′ X 20′ for green beans. with a walk way of 18″ eather side for my tomatoes i would plan for spacing of 8′ on center plants “I used just 6′ feet this year and regretted it” HINT I USED A BIT OF INDIAN TRICK OF putting FISH IN THE BOTTOM OF EACH HOLE AND COVERED WITH A INCH OF SOIL THEN PUT IN MY PLANTS THE RESULTS WERE OUT STANDING OUT OF 6 PLANTS I HAD ALL I COULD EAT GAVE AWAY MANY AND CANNED OVER 30 QTS. the broccoli i would use about 1/2 the space as the green beans same with bed but only a shorter L. same spacing on each side. the other items on your list I find i can buy cheaper from the farmers markets and use my space for experiment on other type of veg’s my next try will be to make a asparagus bed good growing.
