Question by Sarzz: Is it healthier to eat cooked tomatoes or raw ones?
I eat plenty of pasta sauce, tomato soup and other forms of cooked tomatoes. but i heard that cooked vegetables lose their nutritional value such as vitamins and minerals. Is that true about tomatoes also? Is it a better idea to eat raw tomatoes in salads rather than in cooked gravies and sauces?

  1. i think they only lose nutritional value if they are steamed. cooking them doesnt really affect them that much. i really wouldnt be worried about such a small difference anyway, the fact is they are both still very healthy.

  2. both are equally good, they also sat tomato ketchup is very good for u as the concentration of tomatoes is so high in it. i am being serious, it sounds funny but its true. try eating some raw tomatoes too that way u’ve covered all bases

  3. raw it has been proven to keep all the great healthy compounds in. When you cook veggies you are cooking some of the healthy compounds out.

  4. Read that raw ones retain more nutritional value, but cooked tomatoes are still high in nutrition & rich in goodness – personally prefer tomatoes cooked – try frying them with eggs – it’s DELICIOUS.
You may consider cherry tomatoes (raw of course) as snacks/tidbits throughout the day.. :)

  5. raw, definitely

  6. raw vegetables are healthier

  7. raw is always the best

  8. I read in a magazine, tinned tomatoes are the best. Packed with vitamins because they are sealed.

  9. Raw tomatoes have more vitamin C.

But cooked tomatoes’ antioxidants, such as ketchup and tomato sauce are more easily absorbed because the barrier is broken down by the cooking.

So either way, you’re losing or gaining a nutrient.
