Question by papercut: How to describe a sunburn to a black person?
I got sunburned yesterday like a bright red tomato so I’m in extreme pain, but my girlfriend can’t seem to comprehend. Any ideas?

& no this is not me being racist. Obviously not. I just need a good analogy LOL.
Well this is a case by case question. She told me she has NEVER gotten one. Therefore, the first answerer is of no help.

Black people get sunburns too. Their skins just gets lots of blisters, in fact people with darker skin are MORE likely to get a sunburn than people with tan skin. Yes, though someone with PALE skin would get one more easily than anyone. :)

Edit: Aw jeez, I am of no help. :(

I guess that it can be described as someone slapping you really hard.

  1. haha. its like your skin is really tight, and like your continuously ripping giant band aids off.

edit: to everyone who says black people can get sunburns (yep, its true) but pretty uncommon. im sure most people know that person who has dark tan skin and they dont burn, they just get more tan. its the same idea.

  2. Black people still get sunburnt, their skin just doesn’t turn pink as ours does.

The sun doesn’t know what colour skin you have, it burns everyone.

EDIT* You’re right, though. It might be harder for them to get sunburnt.
Say it’s like any other burn, really. Hot, and it hurts. It’s like a bunch of hornets are stinging you at once, if it’s really bad.

  3. Your question made me smile :] <--see? Tell her it's like being tasered every time you move.

  4. Tell her it’s like getting waxed over and over again.

  5. its like having those little things that u throw on the ground and they go “POP” being thrown at u every time u move ;D

  6. 1st answerer is incorrect. Black people can get sunburn but are less likely to compared to pale people, because of the melanin in the skin….so I takes longer!! a black person can lay outside in the bright sun for ten minutes without getting sunburn but the white person will! Thats why they age much more slower because their skin is not as damaged by the radiation from the sun as in for paler people it is very quickly!

Oh and just tell her it’s just like getting burned with steam or something

  7. its when the sun is so powerful that it burns and damages your skin, leaving it looking red and making you feel in pain.

the reason she can’t get sunbured is because black people are black for a reason, they descend from africa, a very sunny country, their skin cannot physically have as much white skin pigments as other people because it would fry their skin daily.

  8. Well, just as a clarification, black people do not sunburn more easily than white. The more fair your skin is, the more quickly you sunburn, because of the pigment in your skin.

Anyway… Black people sunburn, too, yada yada…

Just tell her it’s a burn. From the sun. Yaay.

  9. Hopes your sunburn gets better. =) Now the best way I can explain it being that I’m partially black..tell her your skin feels like when you get your hair tightly braided and it feels like your skin is being pulled.
If she has ever gotten tight braids I’m sure she will understand how you’re feeling because not only does the pulling sensation feel weird but you also get pain and you usually don’t get any relief till like2-3 days later.

But, I do get sunburns and they don’t hurt as much but they do hurt.

  10. Black people burn.

    Stuuu

  11. say it’s like rugburn. but it stings.

  12. Tell her that certain parts of your skin look more red and sore, more darker than other parts of your body. Or that it just feels like you’ve been hit with a laser.

    VIVA LA RAZA!

  13. Tell her it feels like that “waxing ur eyebrows” sting, or ripping tape off your body.~Jess

EDIT: Everyone thinks my mom is black lol she hardly ever gets burned, my dad is Irish lol so i am lucky that i am 1/4 Portuguese Hawaiian so i don’t usually burn!
