Question by Kelly H: Can I use tomato sauce instead of paste in Ketchup recipe?
I’m making Ketchup and the recipe calls for 6 oz. of tomato paste but I’m out so can I substitute tomato sauce instead and would I use the same amount if it will work. Thank You for any help the kids have to have their ketchup.

it will be runny..i suppose that you could put some cornstarch in it to thicken it up.

  1. Thank`s a lot for the recipe, you are so tidy and clean, but if you don`t
mind try to mention the ingredients in grams because some times it is
better to weigh or it is more accurate.THank`s a lot again.

  11. you can if you also use corn starch to thicken it up

  12. It will not be the same consistency, or have the same depth of flavor. How picky are your kids about their ketchup flavor? They may not notice (though mine would have!!)

  13. Tomato paste is concentrated tomato so if you use sauce it will be less intense but it may work. Maybe you should try 8 or so ozs of sauce and reduce it a little, if you can.

  14. It isn’t just that tomato paste is thicker than tomato sauce. It is more concentrated. I think the only way you could use it would be to start with double the amount of sauce (so maybe 12 oz) and cook it down until it is thick like tomato paste. If you use tomato sauce just directly substituted for the paste, your ketchup will not only be too runny, it won’t be tomato-y enough.

  15. I’m sure you can work it out, but it is definitely not the same amount. Tomato paste is very thick and sauce is very thin. You’re just going to have to play around with it.

  16. Yes you can use the tomato sauce. If you are using it in a chili or soup you can just boil it down to concentrate the sauce. If you are using it in something else you might want to cut back the amount.

  17. No. Tomato paste is used as a thickener. You’ll have runny ketchup.

  18. You could, but first you need to reduce the tomato sauce so it is thick like tomato paste. By cooking it until thick it should do the same job as the tomato paste and have the same flavor. It would be easier to run to the store and buy tomato paste. Good luck.

  19. It will not give you the result you are looking for sorry , but you can add cornstarch to the sauce before adding to the pot . Go by this method of 4 tbsp. cornstarch for every gallon of liquid you are cooking .
