Question by Nicole S: How can I keep a low carb diet if everything contains carbs?
I am really stressed out over this because I have PCOS, and I am supposed to keep a low carb diet to lower the effects and lose weight. I also want to get pregnant. I love veggies and fruit, but it seems like all the veggies and fruit have tons of carbs? I am so confused. I just had a tasty snack of red radishes, baby carrots, and cherry tomatoes…yumm..but im sure it was a fattening snack!

You may want to try the South Beach Diet. It lets you slowly eat fruits in the later stages, versus Atkins where most fruit is a no-no as long as you are on the diet.

I believe most veggies are low in carbs, except the starchy ones like potatoes and corn.

  1. Even though fruits and vegetables contain carbohydrates, they are not fattening. Your doctor may just want you to avoid breads, pastas, starches (like rice and potatoes), and sweets–those kinds of carbs. I would call my doctor to ask specifically, to be sure, and he/she might even have some specific suggestions for you regarding good foods for you to be eating!

  2. What is PCOS ? I did well on Adkins but you have to read the book or you will do it wrong.

One thing I remember is that not all carbs count. Look at total carbs then subtract the fiber carbs from it. Most veggies rate well and berries better than other fruits.

  3. You’ll probably find it extremely difficult to get slim using a Low Carb Dieting Plan. Low carb diets have recently become popular over the last couple years, but the problem with low carb menus is that they are too strict and TOO HARD TO FOLLOW for average people. Low carb menus tend to rob your body of too much energy (carbohydrates) and make it nearly impossible to remain on the program for very long. This is why so many dieters find it difficult to follow a strict low carbohydrate menu.

  4. You should pick up a book from the library to learn the carb counts of many foods. The Protein Power book is a nice one because they give you lots of options. Most veggies are fine … carrots are a smidge high but not really that bad. Some veggies are high in carbs, but not many of them. You want to stay away from potatoes and corn except in very small amounts, and you want to not eat sweet potatoes or peas very much. Some fruits are low in carb, those are berries and melons. Peaches and other “stone fruits” like apricots, nectarines etc. aren’t that bad .. apples and bananas are very high carb and should be avoided.

Most processed foods are high carb …. you are going to want to eat mostly meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, any vegetables except the ones I mentioned, and berries/melons.

  5. Well, carbs from fruit and vegetables are healthy carbs which are good even you are in a diet. Carbs seen in fruits and vegetables are not the same carbs found in pasta or bread which are starchy carbs that are not good if you want to lose weight.
