Question by Zindzi: Is there a difference in taste between green, yellow and red tomatoes?
And are they available around the same season? Also, does any company make tomato sauce out of green or yellow tomatoes?

they have the same health content. yes they all grow at the same time, some just have the DNA to show a different color. red is the conventional choice for all tomato products. interesting question.

  1. well it depends on what you mean by green cause if it is unripe tomatoes that are green they have a more sour of a taste and yellow and red usualy taste about the same maybe with a little difference. i hope that helps you =)

  2. The tomatoes that are different varieties have different flavors. The yellow tomatoes are a little sweeter. The red flavor depends on the particular variety you are trying. An heirloom red I ate tonight had THE BEST real tomato flavor. A Roma was not so sweet and strongly tomato in flavor, and it too was red. The little red cherry tomato was just bursting with a little sweeter, sharper tomato flavor. The green tasted about the same as the red, but was a tad bit sharper and tart. It was not an unripe “green” tomato. I think they are a little flat in flavor, but perhaps it depends on when they are harvested. A green tomato that is unripe could have a much sharper, more sour flavor when eaten earlier in the season. I like to make the traditional fried green tomatoes, and it does have a little smack to it. However, if you let your green tomatoes get bigger and harvest them really late (I get away with this in California before the first heavy frost) they are not so sour and sharp tasting. I found some heirloom tomatoes on sale recently and have had a great time tasting all of the flavors with the various colors. It is not true that all tomatoes taste the same, regardless of color…..heirlooms are awesome!

As for tomato sauce in different colors…Heinz made a green ketchup a while back. Did not try it. Also Mexican food has a green salsa, but I think it is made with tomatillos. Green tomatoes may be a nice change.
