Question by NONAME: Why is it so hard to grow cucumbers?
Every year, I grow tomatoes and they come out great but I CANNOT get any cucumbers to grow. I planted small cuke plants last week and they’re already dying. The weather has been great and I’ve tried everything. Why won’t my cukes grow at all but my tomatoes grow to be ripe, beautifiul and delicious?

  1. What is killing them? Are they spaced apart ? How is the soil? Is it the area in the garden that your growing them at? Do you have an insect problem? Are you over fertilizing them?

  2. I’m sure you will find the problem is in your soil. Different plants have different needs. The most sure proof method of getting to the bottom of your problem is to take a soil sample and send it off to your county extension center. Tell them what your problem is and they will most certainly be able to tell you how to solve it. It’s probably something like a calcium or boron deficiency that the home gardener just can’t detect.

Short of that just dig a 2 foot diameter hole about 8 inches deep, get a bag of manure from Lowes, throw in a two hand fulls of blood meal, 4 hand fulls of bone meal, a cup of wood ashes if you have them. Mix it all together with the dirt that came from the hole and fill it back in. You should have a mound by then and plant 4 seeds in the top of the mount. If they come up, and I’m sure they will, let them grow until the true leafs form and then cut out the two weakest. Keep them watered and weeded and I think you will get good cucs.

  3. if theyre dying that fast it must be a problem with the way you transplanted…cukes do not transplant well, but most varieties take less than 60 days to yield from seed…any soil that will support “great” tomatoes should be good for cukes, because their nutrient demands are similar, actually, cukes will do ok with less fertilizer & water…i suggest you buy cuke seed today and plant it when your soil is 60F, you should have cukes by august

  4. The plants are really poor transplanters and many do not transition for the greenhouse to the garden. skip the plants and just go with seeds. I only water them when they are planted and again when fruiting and dont bother them the rest of the season.

  5. the guy calling an entire NHL team soft wants to know how to grow cucumbers. bahahahaha. do you want to shove them up your ass or something? and why would you make your name “no cukes”? are you really that obsessed with cucumbers? i think we know who’s the soft one here…
