Tomato Cage & Growing Tomatillos

A rookie attempt at cageing heirloom tomatoes. Used free materials so nothing lost and hopefully lots gained.

Question by domerT: What type of trellis should I use, and are any easy building plans available?
I’m planning to grow tomatoes and Boston Ivy in my garden this year. What type of trellis does each require? And I’d like to build them myself, if they’re not too difficult. I’m not looking for anything fancy, just plans that allow me to cover a five foot tall wall. Thanks!

Tomatoes ideally need to be freestanding so that the air can circulate well and there is maximum light to ripen the fruits. Try a circle of reinforcing steel mesh in a ring that you could just about stand in for a couple of plants, a good 7ft high. Cheap and easy and can be stored flat through the winter. It may need a stake or two if your garden is windy. Check out www.growbetterveggies.com

Boston Ivy, botanical name Parthenocissus tricuspidata is a self clinging climber. It needs no support as it will climb a wall unaided. Spread the plant out as wide as you can, close to the ground to get maximum spread and chop the ends of the stems off every now and again to get a good thick coverage, otherwise it may not go where you want it to go. Any errant shoots can be held against the wall or fence with a cane until they get the hang of holding on for themselves.

  24. Thank you! I have used lots of compost, composted manure (chicken, steer, sheep, and horse). Have added some wood chips and straw as a cover which has now become part of the soil. I will be adding some rock minerals one of these days. So far I have not found any locally.

  25. Thank you! That’s good information to have about the flea beetles. So far nothing has attacked them but I’m sure the bugs will be making their appearance.
