Question by Midge: do tomatillos make good fried green tomatoes, or only an actual tomato for that?

It has to be a real tomato. The tomato should be nearly ripe, usually a light “spring” green rather than a dark green.

  1. The tomatillo fruit is related to the cape gooseberry and is not a tomato at all. They don’t have the same texture or flavor as a tomato.

    You could slice and fry them as you do a green tomato, but they would not taste the same. They are mainly used to make green sauces, such as tomate verde.

  2. Tomatillos are not tomatoes, or even related to tomatoes. They are related to gooseberries. Use unripe tomatoes instead.

  3. tomatillos are used in salsa verde – it’s not the same flavor as a tomato. You need an actual tomato.
