Question by Melissa: Can I “puree” everything before cooking? Homemade tomato soup?
Hi, I’m going to make homemade tomato soup, with onions and celery and garlic among other things. I’m using canned diced tomatos, and I was wondering if I could just sautee what I needed to, then stick everything in a blender BEFORE I cook it. Is this ok? Otherwise I hear I have to cook the soup, then put portions into the blender….it just sounds like more hassel. Thanks!

You could but the soup will cook better if you cook it

  7. Yum that looks good and healthy Henrycems thanks for sharing.

  8. Cant see why you couldnt….but its a shame you dont have one of the stick blenders, you could just puree the soup after its cooked, and everything would be soft and blend easily together.
When I make potato soup, I start off with large chunks of potatoes, onions, etc. If my kids knew there were onions in the soup they wouldnt eat it. But after cooking it for several hours, I find I can easily puree the soup with just a whip.

  9. Yes you could do that before you cook it.Just be sure not to heat it up to high to quick or it will scorch it..thats why they usually do it the other way but its just as easy doing it the way you want to..hope that helped..

  10. puree after it’s best I use the food processor but if you like use the blender just make sure not to fill it too much .

  11. You will have a lot better flavor if you give the veggies a quick saut, just until they are crisp tender.

Then add the toms and simmer until the veggies are good and tender. Then put in the blender or food proccesor.

For creamy soup add sour cream to one batch in the blender/processor, and mix well. Bring back up to temp.

  12. Ironically, I just made homemade tomato soup this evening, and that’s exactly what I did–I pureed it while everything was still cool. I mainly just did it because it seemed safer–I’ve splattered hot soup all over the place in the past. I think that it turned out just fine. Enjoy the soup!
