Question by Vet’s Daughter: Will a broken tomato plant grow?
Hi-my 3 year old nephews and I planted a container garden for their Grandma for Mother’s Day today (it was the first dry weekend we had). Anyway-we put a tomato plant in a large, large container and it had about 12-14 inches of growth and leaves. It’s a full size tomato, maybe a Beefeater or a Better Boy variety. Then one child fell on it. The top of the stem broke off.
Now there is about 2-3 inches of plant above the soil and a couple branches with leaves. It looked like a clean break and the parts below it looked fine. Plus, the roots were already in the ground and weren’t damaged.
Do you think it will continue to grow?

It probably will with TLC. I am sorry that it happened and I hope that Grandma gets lots of tomatoes from it. Good luck!

Yes, it will grow. Tomato plants are very good at overcoming broken branches and stems. As long as you take care of it from here on in, I’m sure it will continue to grow and eventually produce fruit.
Buddy, if it’s broken at the stem then I think there is lesser chance of survival but if it is broken somewhere else, with roots in the ground, then you need to be bit patient. You can just put the broken stem deep into the ground to see whether it regrows or not. To ensure safety and good health of plants, you could just place the tomato plant inside a portable flower house and observe its condition.
